Working in bad weather is just part of the course when you are a contractor. Cold weather, hot weather, it does not matter. When there is a job to do, it has to be done. Whenever you are forced to work in bad weather, you should always work with a partner or buddy. You can monitor each other for weather related stress. Here are tips that may help working in bad weather more tolerable.

Hot Weather Tips

  • When possible, you should try to schedule the most strenuous physical labor for early in the mornings or early evening.
  • Consume at least 16 ounces of water every hour that you are working under the sun.
  • Watch for signs of heat stress, such as exhaustion and headache.
  • Wear sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15.
  • Wear a hat that protects your neck from the sun’s rays.
  • Wear sunglasses.
  • Take breaks in the shade.
  • Stay away from caffeine and sugar
  • Wear light colored clothing that is breathable – such as cotton.

Cold Weather Tips

  • Wear at least three layers of clothing.
  • Drink warm drinks. While you may not be sweating in the cold weather, your body can still become dehydrated.
  • Eat more calories.
  • Take breaks to warm up.
  • You should avoid nicotine and caffeine when working in cold weather.
  • Try to shield your work area from wind and drafts.
  • Use the warmest times of the day to do work that would expose you to the coldest air.
  • Watch for cold related stress. This includes fatigue, drowsiness and heavy shivering.

Tool Tips for Bad Weather

  • In cold weather, give your tools time to warm-up before you use them.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for grease and oil.
  • Don’t make sharp bends when trying to wind cords.
