Title: Tips for Hiring and Finding Professional Workers - Red Box Tools

Hiring and finding professional contractors & workers can be difficult. Many of the people or contractors who are seeking employment are wonderful sales people. They can make you believe they know their stuff, but when you get them on the job site you quickly see that they do not know what they are doing. Here are some tips that will let you see through these sales people and find out exactly who you are hiring.

  • Check references, If a future employee or contractor or company tells you that they have worked for company X or client Y, you should call that company or client and verify. Ask about the character of the workers, worker’s capabilities and work ethics. Ask about the finished product and if it the company or client were happy.  A few quick phone calls can go a long way when you are finding professional workers.
  • Always ask for a copy of the individual’s and/or company’s license if they are claiming to have one.
  • If you are hiring out work to contractors, always ask for proof of insurance. You should also verify that it is still in good standing.
  • Write out a good contract, The contract should include the name of the individual or company that you are contracting the work out to, along with the license number of the workers. The contract should also include a thorough description of the work is going to be performed and the dollar mount that is being paid. List a payment schedule, termination clause and estimated time of start and finish. If permits are to be pulled for the job, the contract should state who is responsible for pulling them.
  • If any changes are made to a contract, they should be documented and signed.
  • Ask for receipts for any products which are purchased.
Never, ever pay for a job in cash. You should always pay by check.
