Title: Installing a ceiling fan - Red Box Tools
A ceiling fan is a great addition to any home. It can provide an excellent alternative method for cooling that is cost effective and efficient. Homes that use ceiling fans can save money on their energy bills and enjoy their decorative beauty as well.
If you would like to install a ceiling fan in your home, it is a good idea that you have a basic understanding of wiring and electricity. Some ceiling fans also include a light fixture and you will need to ensure that your electrical circuits can handle both currents. If not, you will need to run an additional circuit. Also, you may be fortunate enough to have previously installed ceiling fans, therefore allowing you to install new ones in the same location. Otherwise, you will need to run wiring from an existing circuit to the new ceiling fan.
There are also safety codes that must be met when installing a ceiling fan. This includes having enough clearance underneath the fan, as well as having the required distance from the top of the fan to the ceiling. Check with your building codes to ensure the proper distance, but generally a minimum of 7’ is required from the floor to the lowest part of the ceiling fan’s blades. If you discover that you will not be able to meet the distance required, you may want to purchase a “low ceiling mount”. This can help increase the distance from the floor to the lowest part of the blade. You will also need at least 12” from the top part of your ceiling fan to the ceiling. Check with your building codes for their recommendations as well.
After you have purchased the ceiling fan and have determined the correct distances for the installation procedure, you will need to ensure that you have any tools required to complete the project. Some of the tools that you will need include: mounting kit, lock washers, cables, box connectors, wire nuts, bonding screws, stud locator, ladder, electrician’s pliers, wire stripper, cable ripper, No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, and claw hammer.
