Title: The Importance of Maintenance on Your Power and Air Tools

Tools are always a big investment, whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or a large contracting business.  It’s important to keep in mind that maintaining your power and air tools is extremely important since they’re needed to get the job done effectively.  Generally, the rule of thumb is to remember what’s needed is some routine maintenance and cleaning.

If this is done on a fairly regular basis, your tools should last for many years to come.  In addition, whether the tools will be used for roofing, plumbing, electrical, or in a builder situation, the instructions should always be gone over carefully before trying to operate an electric or air-powered tool.  Ensuring that your tools are well-oiled and lubricated is also extremely important.

Anything with high powered moving parts should be oiled on a regular basis to ensure smooth movement and the prevention of rust or breakage.  This will also help your tools work a lot better and much more smoothly.  For air compressed tools, adding a small amount of oil to them every day will ensure that they run well.  You should also check the filters and the components to be sure all parts are working cleanly and tightly, such as the air seals.

Another key to maintaining the large number of tools you use on a daily basis is to keep an inventory list so you know exactly what you should have in your shop.  As a contractor, you “lend” out your power tools to employees with the knowledge that they will bring them back to you when they’re done.  Sometimes things can get lost, left at job sites, or other situations, so keeping a running list is a good idea.  Along with a list, keep track of which tools are scheduled for routine maintenance, and stick by that schedule.

Be sure you know when everything needs to be taken in to get a check up, and then follow that schedule as best as you can.  For larger power and air powered tools, this maintenance is an absolute necessity.  As a contractor you’ll spend much more money on repairs or replacement for tools than you will if you follow a closely regulated maintenance routine.

Developers, plumbers, builders, electricians, roofers, and many other contractors all know that their tools are the key to helping get the job done.  With higher quality tools that require a lot of power, or are run on compressed air, it’s a must to maintain them so they function properly and last a long time.  Tools such as saws and sanders should be maintained regularly by checking their blades and making sure they keep their sharpness.

Other basic contracting tools such as cordless drills, screwdrivers, power rotary tools, and drill presses require somewhat less stringent maintenance, but they should be taken care of using common sense such as keeping them out of the weather and away from dust and debris that can cause damage.  All in all, taking good care of your tools is the best way to be sure they’ll perform to their maximum capacity.
