Bell V-247 Vigilant

Bell V-247 Vigilant

The Bell V-247 Vigilant is an ambitious concept developed by Bell Helicopter, aiming to create a large tiltrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to meet the evolving needs of the U.S. military. Positioned within the Group 4 or 5 UAV category, the V-247 is engineered to provide persistent support to ground forces with a unique capability for runway-independent operations, overcoming storage and transportation challenges. Group 4 UAVs weigh more than 1,320 lb (600 kg) and fly below 18,000 ft (5,500 m), while Group 5 UAVs fly above 18,000 ft.

The V-247 Vigilant’s versatility extends to various missions, including electronic warfare, persistent fire support, airborne early warning (AEW), and resupply. Bell Helicopter specifically eyes its potential integration into the U.S. Marine Corps’ Marine Air Ground Task Force – Unmanned Expeditionary Capabilities (MUX) concept, aiming to perform tasks akin to MQ-1 Predator and Reaper aircraft while operating from amphibious assault ships, complementing and escorting the MV-22.

The aircraft’s design specifications include a weight of 16,000 lb (7,300 kg) when empty, capable of carrying up to 13,000 lb (5,900 kg) of fuel, weapons, and sensors, resulting in a maximum gross weight of 29,000 lb (13,000 kg). The V-247 Vigilant features a single engine generating 5,000-6,000 shp (3,670-4,410 kW), a wingspan of 65 ft (20 m), and tilting rotors with a diameter of 30 ft (9.1 m). With a V-shaped tail, retractable tricycle landing gear, and the ability to fold for size compatibility with U.S. Navy destroyers and transport aircraft, the V-247 Vigilant is designed to offer exceptional performance.
