AgustaWestland CH-149 Cormorant

The AgustaWestland CH-149 Cormorant, known as the AgustaWestland AW101 (formerly EH101) in Canada, serves the Canadian Forces as a medium-lift helicopter designed for air-sea rescue missions. Developed by AgustaWestland, now part of Leonardo, it has become a crucial asset in military applications.

The origins of the CH-149 trace back to the British Ministry of Defence’s 1977 requirement for an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter, leading to the formation of EH Industries—a joint venture between Agusta and Westland. The EH101 prototype took its first flight in 1987.

Competing with the Sikorsky H-92 in 2004 for the Maritime Helicopter Project, the EH101 lost, and the Sikorsky entry was selected. The CH-149 Cormorant achieved its first operational flight in 2002, showcasing its capabilities in a medical evacuation from a merchant ship.

The Royal Canadian Air Force remains the primary operator of the CH-149 Cormorant, showcasing its significance in fulfilling air-sea rescue and utility roles for Canada.
