Embraer EMB-312 Tucano

The Embraer EMB 312 Tucano, aptly named after the vibrant toucan bird, stands as a testament to Brazil’s aerospace prowess. Developed in response to the Brazilian Air Force’s need for an affordable and efficient basic trainer, the project took flight in 1979 and soared into service in September 1983. This low-wing, tandem-seat, single-turboprop aircraft quickly gained international recognition, becoming one of Embraer’s first global triumphs in the military training domain.

Boasting innovative features that set a new standard for basic training aircraft, the Tucano’s success is reflected in the 664 units produced, with 504 by Embraer and 160 by Short Brothers, serving in 16 air forces across five continents.

Rooted in the strategic vision of the Brazilian military government, Embraer emerged in 1969 to reduce dependency on foreign companies for aircraft production. The Tucano’s genesis was influenced by the 1970s energy crisis, which prompted the Brazilian Air Force to replace the costly-to-operate Cessna T-37C. Embraer responded with two proposals in 1977, leading to the official contract award in December 1978. The Tucano’s maiden flight in 1980 marked the beginning of its impressive journey.
